A certified pedorthist works in a podiatry office or a shoe store to create and modify footwear to ease conditions of the foot. The pedorthist will take measurements from the customer and then make the shoes as necessary. The pedorthist will also follow up with customers and make changes to the footwear whenever necessary. The pedorthist will work with customers in order to determine their needs. Often, the pedorthist will have to customize shoes, so it is important to be creative and knowledgeable. Another item that pedorthists may create are pedorthic devices such as foot prostheses and orthoses.
The pedorthist will also work with various parties, such as doctors and families of patients, in order to gather input to create the custom footwear. The pedorthist will also create medical notes and reports that should be well-written and thorough. It is also necessary to be able to understand charts and medical notes created by other medical personnel. Therefore, strong medical knowledge, along with customer service and communication skills, are needed. Basic computer skills are also needed to carry this out.
The pedorthist should keep up to date with developments in the field to be able to constantly provide the best footwear possible. To be successful in this position, is also important to follow medical guidelines and laws. Prior to application for this position, the pedorthist will need to be certified in pedorthics. Past experience on the field may also have to be shown. A bachelor's degree in a related field is generally required.
