Claims directors work within insurance companies and are responsible for responding to various claims made by its customers. Those in this position work with many other employees of their companies, including adjusters, claims representatives, and administrative staff. While formal education requirements for the position are not necessarily strict, prior work experience within the claims department of an insurance company is often required.
Claims directors have a variety of responsibilities, including: overseeing the payment of all claims; ensuring that each claim is valid and adheres to organizational policies; determining various staffing needs within departments; hiring staff members; conferring with legal counsel in various cases; contacting claimants; obtaining additional information from doctors or specialists regarding claims; reporting payment-irregularities; preparing organizational data and reports; supervising claims adjusters; and providing recommendations regarding activities and procedures.
Those in this position should have in-depth knowledge of insurance claims, natural leadership skills, professional interpersonal communication skills, and superb organizational skills.
