Some coding directors may be responsible for the direct management of coding functions and communications, and they are usually in charge of subordinate staff members within the company, which may include the hiring or termination of particular employees. Coding directors also have direct contact with physicians and medical staff regarding the necessary coding in patients' charts.
A bachelor's degree may be required for this position, and some employers may prefer a master's or only an associate's degree. Strong communication skills and the ability to multitask are essential in this position, as many coding directors are in direct contact with a variety of staff members and professionals on a daily basis.
