CM engineers must produce written overviews of configuration management plans. Due to the complexity of these systems, strong verbal and written communication skills are important in this position to avoid potential misunderstandings. The implementation of a configuration control board is also necessary as these engineers bring software through development and formal testing phases. Configuration management engineers also provide support for all software development and maintain media libraries which contain all of the programs' technical documents. Some may also train other staff members in the proper use of configuration management tools, and creativity and strong problem-solving skills are also beneficial for this position.
A bachelor's degree and work history that includes software configuration management are generally required for this position, as are advanced abilities in Unix and Linux and a solid understanding of Microsoft Office. Hours are flexible, though CM engineers typically work full-time weeks, and travel time is minimal aside from attending occasional conferences and meetings.
