Deputy directors are one level lower than directors in the civil service. Deputy directors report to the director of their organization. As a senior-level director, they would nearly always have staff members reporting to them. Their direct reports could be anyone from clerks and administrative assistants to scientists and engineers, depending on the size and focus of their organization. The larger the organization, the more likely that deputy directors would mostly supervise mid-level managers.
Most deputy directors work primarily indoors in an office environment. However, some deputy directors may spend a portion of their time outdoors reviewing the progress of projects. The work is mental in nature and would mostly occur during regular office hours. The work would involve attending and running meetings, establishing policies, overseeing department projects, and managing fiscal resources. Educational requirements may vary greatly depending on the organization. A bachelor’s degree would be an expected minimum requirement for a management position of this type. Generally, previous management experience would also be expected.
