Job Description for HVAC Mechanic
An HVAC mechanic performs installation and maintenance tasks related to heating and cooling units such as heating systems, air conditioning systems, and refrigeration units. On a day-to-day basis, HVAC mechanics typically perform light maintenance on heating, cooling and vent systems; respond to emergency calls; and make at home visits to perform repairs. They also analyze systems to make sure they are running smoothly and efficiently; additionally, they must ensure systems are running safely. To qualify as an HVAC mechanic, a high school education or GED is generally required. Employers also typically require at least one to three years of experience in a related field and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification to handle refrigerants. HVAC mechanics must have good interpersonal skills and be able to complete tasks under deadline. This position may be physically demanding and may require the ability to lift 50 pounds or more. The ability to stand, bend, or kneel for long periods of time while performing mechanical tasks is also expected. HVAC mechanics may work part time or full time; their hours vary depending on their employers' needs and hours of operation.

- Repair and rebuild complex commercial HVAC and environmental systems, touring and inspecting regularly.
- Keep all HVAC and mechanical rooms clean, orderly, and organized.
- Calibrate thermostats and ensure appropriate temperatures are maintained.
- Oversee outside contractors and HVAC technicians to ensure timely service and performance.
