Job Description for Nurse Home Care
Home care nurses provide a variety of health services to patients inside their homes; this position is typically associated with senior citizens and chronically-ill patients with complex medical needs. These nurses work primarily within their patients’ homes in all sorts of shifts, which may include overnight or weekend shifts depending on patients and their individual needs. Home care nurses must be licensed and certified in their states of employment; this process can be accomplished via a diploma program or earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, and may also include certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Ongoing education and training are typically required, as well.
Home care nurses may have a variety of responsibilities, including: administering medication; monitoring vital signs; educating patients and families; observing and assessing the health of each patient; tending to basic personal care; assisting with mobility; preparing meals and feeding; escorting to appointments; and providing additional specialized treatment as necessary. These nurses serve as primary companions for their patients and must have kind, compassionate, and helpful attitudes to succeed in their positions.
