Job Description for Storeman

Storemen play a necessary function for any company that has supply storage (stock) or equipment. This pertains to most businesses, but a storeman is needed wherever a company has large storage facilities. Storemen keep equipment and storage organized so everything is easily accessible by employees.
While a storeman's primary function is in keeping storage organized, storemen must also record inventory and track the spending for anything they store or need. When something is running low, they order more. Storemen must also have established a system so that everything can be easily found and easily tracked when it is removed from storage. Storeman are responsible for the cost of supplies a business uses, so they must also be good at finding the best deals. A storeman generally has an office but works primarily in a warehouse. The working hours for storemen are usually typical business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Storemen are usually the head of the receiving department, and they have employees who work under them. The storeman must also check anything that the business is receiving to make sure that it is in good condition. Storemen generally report to operations supervisors or general managers.
Requirements for this position are a high school diploma and experience in shipping and handling or storage. A college degree is not usually required but is beneficial in obtaining the position.
The job of a storeman makes the everybody else's job in a company easier. The storeman also helps to increase productivity and reduce costs for the business.
Storeman Tasks
  • Generate reports on inventory balance and shortages.
  • Count merchandise in stock and post totals to inventory records.
  • Coordinate with shipping to ensure all receiving shipments are moving in and out of warehouse as scheduled.
  • Load and unload trucks.
