Job Description for Unit Secretary, Emergency Room (ER)

An emergency room (ER) unit secretary is in charge of ensuring incoming patients and visitors are directed to the proper area upon arrival into the hospital. They generally talk to patients' families about whether the patient can be visited at that time, as well as answer phone calls at the nursing station or front desk; they also redirect calls to the appropriate person or unit as needed. In addition, emergency room unit secretaries are usually responsible for admitting patients into the emergency waiting room, as well as checking individuals in and out for inpatient and outpatient care and therapies. The emergency room unit secretary must keep all files and paperwork organized for easy access, as nurses and other hospital staff generally need to pull up pertinent information on patients.
