VPs of technical operations work with subordinates to set departmental budgets and map out firmware and software architecture to meet the needs of both employees and customers. They must also ensure that all employees are properly trained to work with proprietary software, and typically receive reports and examine technical support both within the company for employees and externally to meet customers' needs.
VPs of technical operations also work with management teams to set rules and procedures for information-sharing within the company. This may include ensuring that technical teams have proper data storage protocols in place, including encryption and firewalls, to ensure the security of sensitive company information.
As a director or board-level executive, the VP of technical operations may create regular reports on the status of information technology operations within the company and present this information as measurable data to an executive team or other board members. These reports are crucial for securing financial requests for capital improvements to technical infrastructure in the company, including necessary upgrades to hardware, software, and operating systems.
Aspiring technical operations VPs should have an extensive background and education in information technology, and a college degree in a computer science-related field may be required to work within a corporate operation. Those in this position also have an administrative assistant or staff and typically work in a private office for 50 or more hours per week, and regular travel may also be necessary depending on the employer.
