Job Description for Assistant Coach

Assistant coaches are responsible for assisting head coaches in planning, organizing, and evaluating all aspects of the athletic group they represent. This is done in a variety of ways, such as helping to run practice sessions, motivating athletes, and instructing them on how to follow through with strategies set out by the head coach. In many cases, the specific duties of assistant coaches are dependent on the head coach. For example, some head coaches will give their assistants direct coaching responsibilities, whereas other coaches require assistant coaches to respond entirely to the head coach's directives. They are usually responsible for preparatory tasks, such as procuring and maintaining equipment (unless the organization has an equipment manager). At other times, they may assist with administrative tasks, such as collecting and reviewing applications from prospective players or keeping statistics of players during practices and games. They also discuss strategies and decisions with the head coach.
