Job Description for Commercial Artist
A commercial artist is a graphic design professional who works to create drawings, lettering, and backgrounds for advertising stills or overlays for animation. Commercial artists typically work as part of dedicated graphic design companies, but many private businesses with large marketing departments also have creative teams with commercial artists. The artist generally works from written concept descriptions, which may come directly from the client, from ad copy writers or from members of the branding team. They create mock-ups and eventually final renderings to be used in a campaign.Read More...
Commercial artists' work is presented in a variety of media and platforms. This may include, among others, computers, mobile devices, print advertising, television, advertising signs and billboards, political campaign graphics, and advertising flyers for stores and events. Most commercial artists use a combination of traditional media such as pencils, inks and paper, as well as computer drawing and painting software. In some cases, the commercial artist may use 3D modeling software as well.
Many commercial artists seek out education and training from art colleges, vocational or trade schools, or universities. Commercial artists typically need an extensive portfolio of published and non-published work as well.
