According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for the field of cosmetology is very favorable, with employment opportunities expected to increase over the next few years. While many cosmetologists work in salon or spa settings, some are also employed by nursing homes, and many are self-employed. According to PayScale's salary data, becoming self-employed may be a wise career choice; the upper end of the median salary range for self-employed cosmetologists far exceeds the salary range for other employers, as shown on the Cosmetology Salary by Employer Type chart. In order to get licensed to work in this field, a cosmetology program - and state licensing examination - must first be completed. Specific requirements may vary between states, but all cosmetologists must complete this training before entering the field. Since this is a service industry, communication skills are very important. And, if you're planning to be self-employed, gaining business skills can also be important. It's not uncommon for a cosmetologist to play many roles, from beauty expert to salesperson to business guru. As these skills are honed over time, cosmetologists can expect to be compensated for their greater experience level. To see how entry-level salaries compare salaries for more experienced positions, see the chart showing the median Cosmetology Salary by Years Experience.
