While this position requires knowledge of exercise equipment, the actual tools for working are generally office supplies such as a computer, telephone, pen and paper, and other typical office supplies. Being a general manager of a fitness club usually requires a bachelor's degree in business management, but some obtain the job with a bachelor's degree in health or fitness. Experience in management and fitness-related jobs is also usually required.
The general manager of a fitness club must be able to lead teams of people in multiple departments while also having a particular knowledge for health and fitness. General managers of fitness clubs must also be able to recognize trends in popular fitness programs, as they tend to come and go much like clothing styles.
