Pastor, Ministry Salary

The majority of Ministry Pastors in the United States — just over a half — boast more than 10 years of experience in their profession. Salaries stretch from $24K to $66K per year, and the median is $45K annually. The majority of Ministry Pastors claim high levels of job satisfaction. Although the larger part have medical coverage and a little less than one-half have dental coverage, just under one in three claim no health benefits at all. Participants in PayScale's salary questionnaire provided the particulars of this report.

Job Description for Pastor, Ministry

Ministry pastors tend to the needs of their congregations. Pastors must enthusiastically believe in their denominations and the mission and vision of their churches in order to lead sermons, and in-depth knowledge of the Bible is necessary in order to construct meaningful sermons and communicate the Bible's teachings. As such, strong public speaking skills and creativity are also important in order to succeed. Pastors may also lead youth group activities, such as Bible study.

For Ministry Pastors, experience does not seem to be a major factor in determining pay. People who have worked for fewer than five years earn around $40K, and folks with five to 10 years of experience see a modestly higher median of $42K. People with 10 to 20 years of experience make an average of about $48K in this role. Ministry Pastors who have acquired more than two decades of experience generally do see greater compensation; their average income is approximately $55K.
