Personal fashion stylists help their clients develop their own personal "styles." Their clients are often celebrities or would-be celebrities aspiring to create a look that is all their own, and personal stylists may also be hired to help choose styles to represent a brand or character in a movie, TV show, or play. Other responsibilities may include helping select apparel and accessories for actors in a music video, members of a band, or a variety of other entertainers who work on-camera.
Personal fashion stylists must be highly skilled in identifying present and future trends, sourcing clothing from all over the world, and creatively assembling outfits that are on the cutting edge of fashion. Knowledge of brands, materials, prints, and styles is essential, and these stylists spend plenty of time working directly with clients to identify their needs and wants, as well as read books, plays, and screenplays to fully understand the character whose style is being developed. Flexibility and communication skills are important in this position, and working within set parameters, such as budget restraints, is also important.
Although there are no strict educational requirements for this position, a deep understanding of the fashion industry is vital for success. Clients' wants and needs can vary greatly, and personal fashion stylists must be flexible and willing to meet their clients where they are needed, such as at home or on the set of a media production. Many stylists work independently, while many are also employed by production companies, clothing companies, and in many other parts of the entertainment industry.
