Professionally, the health care industry, the education industry, and the manufacturing industry are popular business areas among WSU alumni. A large chunk of former WSU students are employed in the automotive manufacturing industry; in fact, this is the most popular job sector for this population. IT services is not a popular industry for WSU grads, and less than two percent of them wind up in the field. The average starting salary for a graduate of WSU is approximately $68K.


It's worth noting that female graduates earn a median salary of $60K whereas the men's median is around $85K.


WSU grads who become Information Technology Managers are compensated well above average — these folks are top-earners among their graduating class, usually making $115K yearly. Also notably well-paid are Information Technology Project Managers and Senior Financial Analysts; their salaries approach $92K and about $85K, respectively. Relative to other positions, compensation dwindles for Financial Analysts; alumni in this role face average salaries of $64K.


Detroit is a city beloved by WSU alumni, and just under a third of grads actually choose to stay and find employment here after completing their coursework. It is no surprise that Dearborn, which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is approximately $82K), is another of the most popular spots for former WSU students. The city with the lowest median paycheck frequented by WSU alumni is Southfield, where earnings average $54K. WSU alumni express interest in nearby Troy and Warren as well.


General Motors Corporation is the top-paying employer among WSU graduates with an average salary of $102K. The university offers the lightest paychecks; employees earn a mere around $50K on average.

Degree Major

A medical degree will compensate WSU grads at a much higher rate than other fields — these alums tend to rake in $177K per year. Ranking last in the compensation department are those holding a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration — their annual income amounts to $40K on average.


Product Development commands a pay premium of 50 percent for former Warriors. Project Management is a common skill among WSU alumni — roughly an eighth of grads mention using it at work. Experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Customer Service is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only about two-fifths of alumni enjoy paid vacation and one-fourth of alumni receive sick leave. Health insurance benefits extend to the greater part of alums, and most former students sign up for dental plans. A solid majority of alums take advantage of a 401(k) plan. Other benefits that Wayne State University alumni receive are life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, a casual working environment, and tuition reimbursement.
