Teachers suffer from allowing their job consume them, to the detriment of their family and health. My advice is to make sure you have some other life activities that counter your classroom side...keep learning new things and going on new adventures. You will be a better teacher and the children will benefit from your fresh stories and happier demeanor. I also believe in seeking and appreciating local resources....live in the place you're in!

Teacher Salary Research

It's no secret that teaching attracts passionate people; if you don't take our word for it, read the comments from real-life teachers above. Bringing that same passion to salary research can pay off in a big way - and if anyone knows the importance of in-depth research, it's a teacher. PayScale's teacher salary data will help you "do your homework" when it comes to researching average teacher salaries.

The Teacher Salary by State chart shows that New York and California currently offer the highest average teacher salaries. That data is for teachers at all levels of experience, however. Teachers who are just starting out should also view the Starting Salary for a Teacher report to see a comparison of median teacher salary by years of experience. The Median Teacher Salary by Job chart shows that for the average teacher, salaries are highest at the high school level. View elementary school salaries to compare average teacher salaries at the elementary level.

Average Teacher Salaries

Dr. Al Lee, PhD has passed Salary 101 with flying colors: when it comes to average teacher salaries, he can even teach the teacher! Learn why asking "what is the median teacher salary" is a better question than "what are average teacher salaries" by reading the Ask Dr. Salary article on "Why is median salary better than average salary?" Dr. Salary is a smart guy, but for even more teacher salary data it helps to go to a real teacher. Read the real-life account of John Rickey, 15-year elementary school veteran, in his Salary Stories post on Elementary School Teacher Average Salary.
