Car rental/leasing agents work for agencies which loan cars to consumers and businesses. These agents must ensure that all customers meet rental requirement guidelines, such as age requirements and credit scores, and commission may be offered based on sales and extra benefits added by the customer. They also prepare rental and return documentation with close attention to detail to ensure that all dates, terms, and charges are correct.
Car rental agents should be able to explain all charges to customers in an efficient manner so that customers understand all applicable fees and rental rates for when the car is both borrowed and returned. Strong communication skill are important in this position to work face-to-face with clients, as well as on the telephone and through electronic means. They may work with several customers at once and should be able to minimize wait-times while providing efficient service, and any problems experienced in service should be resolved to the customer's satisfaction.
A valid driver's license and clean driving record are often necessary in this position to move cars from place to place or drive to pick up clients, and some weekend and/or holiday hours may be required. Some 24-hour rental agencies also offer night shifts, and a high school diploma may be a minimum requirement depending on the employer.
