A media relations manager is responsible for overseeing all communications from their organization with various forms of media, including cultivating and managing all relationships with media representatives. This person will generally work in an office environment and maintain typical daytime, weekday hours. Most organizations will require that their media relations manager have a bachelor’s degree in a field such as media relations or communication, and many require a master’s degree. A media relations manager will have a variety of responsibilities, including: preparing press releases for the media; improving the public image of their organization; promoting the image in a responsible and coordinated manner; cultivating working relationships within the public; enhancing collaborative relationships with the press; managing news with the media; dispersing information to press and staff in a timely manner; optimizing communication to ensure accuracy of information; serving as a spokesperson to media; creating effective communication channels; enhancing the effectiveness of press; planning press events; assessing public relations concerns as they arise; composing company literature and articles for use within and outside the company; preparing for strategic crisis communications; and providing strategic media relations plans.
Media relations managers will generally lead a small team of personnel within their organization and must have extraordinary communication skills, as well as a high attention to detail and a friendly but assertive personality.
