The worst they can say is no, but no is easy
Information Technology (IT) Consultant - (City withheld for privacy), Massachusetts, United States
Don't be afraid to ask. Just have ammo to back it up. The best ammo is day to day performance that leads to benefits your working group and company.

Go to school
Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer - (City withheld for privacy), Florida, United States
I feel that in order to recieve a pay increase your company must see a return on investment. Organizations are not going to give you something without something in return. The best way to show your organization that you are worth the promotion is to increase your education. Go get a Masters degree.

Good relationship with CEO
Senior Systems Analyst - (City withheld for privacy), Illinois, United States
I had a good relationship with the CEO of my last job, and I was still in college at the time. So after I was done with school, I asked for a raise and made a pretty decent argument for it, and I got it!

Relevant Education
Web Developer - (City withheld for privacy), Minnesota, United States
I've found that pursuing Continue Education and/or Graduate Certificate programs from accredited institutions shows your commitment to the company and the kind of job you want to do for them. For me, it has paid off in promotions and pay increases well in excess of tuition costs.

Be sure you have something to work on
Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer - (City withheld for privacy), Oregon, United States
My "manager" (boss) gave me a finished project to work on, prohibited me from doing anything else, and then said I had low productivity - just in time for the layoffs. Fight like hell to get a task that can show visible productivity. Even though productivity is the result of the sum total of ALL factors, including the ones that the boss is responsible for - you're the one who will get all the blame. Managers like to assume that productivity is like height - it's solely an attribute of the individual, like height.

Difficult co-workers
Database Administrator (DBA) - (City withheld for privacy), Nebraska, United States
Sometimes you may find yourself working in an environment where your co-workers are only interested in their careers and refuse to work as a true team. Some of these types of co-workers may even go so far as to try and make you look bad. My advice, ask the manager to clearly define the scope of your job and focus on it not on these types of people. Also, maintain a positive attitude at all times. Finally, you control your career. Don't let someone try to control your career.

No Raise
Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer - (City withheld for privacy), Texas, United States
I don't think i'm paid fairly. I see others getting a higher pay than me when we do the exact same kind of work. I think i deserve a good raise.
