The U of C alumni can most commonly be found in the consulting industry, software as a service (SAAS) development, and the software development industry, though they are employed throughout a wide range of sectors. The majority of alumni accept jobs in the education industry. In line with impressive SAT scores and graduation rates, U of C grads also report top-earning positions in the workforce. Those with an education from the U of C earn an average of $77K.

It's worth noting that female graduates earn a median salary of $63K whereas the men's median is about $90K.

Former U of C students with an interest in making money consider becoming Portfolio Managers, the highest-paying gig (average earnings amount to around $163K) among this alumni group. Other well-paid jobs include Chief Financial Officers (approximately $154K) and Product Managers of Software ($104K). Salaries are anything but generous for Licensed Clinical Social Workers, whose earnings rank lowest on the pay scale at $42K.

Rather than relocating after graduation, many U of C alumni (over a third of) end up finding permanent jobs in Chicago. It is no surprise that Houston, Texas, which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is around $132K), is another of the most popular spots for former U of C students. U of C alumni in Washington, DC can often be found sliding in at the lower end of the pay scale, where median paychecks are the smallest at $58K. In addition, grads flock to New York, N.Y. as well as San Francisco, Calif.

Degree Major

A medical degree will compensate U of C grads at a much higher rate than other degrees — these alums rake in $240K on average per year. A Master of Social Work (MSW), Clinical Social Work (CSW) is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with a median annual pay of approximately $41K.

Project Management is a common skill among U of C alumni — close to one-seventh of grads mention using it at work. Strategic Planning commands a pay premium of 30 percent for University of Chicago grads. Experience with Data Analysis, Microsoft Excel, and Financial Analysis is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

When it comes to benefits, there is room for improvement — only one-third of alumni are paid for vacation and just one-fourth of alumni for sick time. Dental insurance applies to a strong majority of alums, and most former students report health coverage. A large number of grads report contributing to a 401(k). University of Chicago graduates also take advantage of a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.

Related Schools

Compensation averages about $79K for Johns Hopkins University alumni, making their earnings most comparable to U of C grads. Other schools similar to U of C include Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, and Case Western Reserve University.
