What it's like to be a manager in my shop.
General / Operations Manager:
Pros: My automotive garage is a two-location family-run place; the owner is my father, and we plan on my being his successor. My employees are fun and good at their jobs, and when we hired them they had little experience so we didn't have to break bad habits. My main job, as a sales person, is to educate the customer about their car and what it needs so they can make the best decisions for repairs, which makes me feel I'm doing something good. We're providing honest repairs in an industry with a bad reputation, and I think we're needed. It is also my job to manage the work flow in the garage, ordering parts, and more. What makes my job different is that, as a small company, I am responsible for many roles; I manage payroll, filing, accounting, customer transportation, buy office supplies, cleaning, networking, make decisions on advertising... I do everything from advising the "CEO" to scrubbing the toilet. So I feel my role is important, secure, and I feel I'm really good at my job.
Cons: Customers can provide the most stress; they can be sexist, as I am a female in the auto world, and they can easily get upset. People take their cars very personal. And with the casual environment it's easy for my employees and I to butt heads due to them perhaps not getting that I'm their boss. Working with my dad also can cause some friction, as our relationship is not strictly professional. With all the roles I play it gets stressful. And the most stressful thing is knowing that I have a huge hand in the failure or success of this business, and it gives me anxiety to think I might not be able to do as well as my father has.

Enterprise management rarely knows what it needs.
General / Operations Manager:
Have no opinions.
Using the W's to make an assessment of the:
*job requirements of key subordinate personnel.
*risk - safety, property, environment.
*work rules - all personnel.
*security - facilities, inventories, vehicles.
*interaction requirements with peers - and professional staff.
*validity of the business calendar and ensure all critical reporting to/from are noted with advanced prompting, all events.
*save for safety and regulatory compliance most non-threat items requiring change can be done most effectively - incrementally.
*Listen, Listen, Listen and take notes to post on a personal to do board.
