Executive Assistant in Cleveland:
CWRU completely undervalues their staff employees. The job description for my position begins with "High School Graduate". There I s no way that high school graduate has the proper skill sets, much less even the minimum skill sets, to perform at the expected level this position requires, which is essentially a Chief of Staff position, but is seen by HR as a gofer job. Every new job position that our department has submitted to HR -- from administrative to technical, to even faculty, has been downgraded, and dismantled so that we have few, if any candidates that are interested in even applying for these positions. I was told to my face, when I requested a pay increase to compensate me properly for my duties, of which I have taken on many that were not performed by the person previously in this position, that I was already being paid just above the median, and that they won't pay toward the higher level for this level...a range up to $15K above where I currently am paid. HR's argument, and my boss's is that I'm earning far more than my base salary since I'm being paid overtime! OT doesn't kick in at time and a half until I hit 40 hours, since this job is considered a 37-1/2 hour a week job, yet I'm averaging 50 hour work weeks. This low-balling is true throughout the University...and at almost every level.
