How Payscale Uses AI

At Payscale, we use artificial intelligence (AI) thoughtfully and responsibly to enhance our compensation intelligence platform—helping customers make confident, defensible pay decisions while keeping people at the center of every outcome. Our approach to AI is grounded in transparency, trust, and the belief that compensation professionals—not algorithms—own the final decisions.

Payscale’s Philosophy on AI

AI at Payscale is designed to support, not replace, human expertise. We build and use AI to help customers work more efficiently, uncover insights more quickly, and focus their time on strategic decision-making.

Because compensation decisions carry legal and ethical implications, we take special care to design AI capabilities that are assistive rather than automated. AI outputs are subject to human review, and we continuously assess features for accuracy and risk of unintended bias.

Key principles guide our approach:

Human Accountability: AI supports compensation professionals; it does not replace them. Humans remain responsible for all final business decisions.

Transparency: We clearly communicate when and how AI is used in our products and provide additional information upon request.

Data Privacy and Security: Customer data is protected under strict governance controls. We do not use any Customer Data (as defined in the MSA) to train AI models.

Fairness and Bias Mitigation: We evaluate AI-enabled features as appropriate to reduce the risk of bias and continuously monitor outputs for accuracy and fairness in compensation analytics.

Continuous Improvement: We regularly review our AI practices to reflect evolving regulations, customer expectations, and technological advancements.

Data Privacy and Model Training

Protecting Customer Data is foundational to how we operate.

  • We do not use Customer Data to train AI models.
  • We do not use Customer Data to train third-party generative AI models.
  • AI capabilities within Payscale products operate under the same strict data protection and security controls that apply to the rest of our platform.

Our use of AI aligns with our broader data governance, privacy, and security commitments.

Transparency and Additional Information

We understand that some customers and prospects may require deeper insight into how AI functions within Payscale products.

  • Existing customers may request additional information regarding production functionality or AI usage by contacting their Customer Success Manager.
  • Prospective customers or non-contracted organizations may request additional details; however, the disclosure of certain information may require execution of a mutual non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

This approach helps us balance transparency with our responsibility to protect sensitive information, intellectual property, and the security of our systems.
