System support technicians work on computer systems within a company, performing tasks such as configuring computer systems, helping with system repairs, and installing parts of (or entire) computer systems. They are also responsible for maintaining the system to ensure that all parts are functioning properly and that all system updates are installed as needed. Another major job function of a system support technician is to provide support to all staff using these systems, which includes answering users' questions, as well as maintaining and assigning company passwords to employees that require system access, among other tasks.

It is important that system support technicians always maintain the proper amount of repair equipment such as extra wiring, software, and anything needed to fix or install pieces of the system. It may also be necessary to attend company meetings to inform the staff and/or upper management of any changes or repairs that are necessary to keep the system running correctly. Sometimes, system support technicians must attend meetings to help determine if changes to the system would help the company function better. They may also have to write periodic reports to inform staff of changes or address issues and ideas with upper management.
