Review time is coming up, and while raises aren’t expected to amaze anyone next year, it’s almost always worth it to make your case for more money. Data gathered for PayScale’s Salary Negotiation Guide showed that 75 percent of those who asked for a raise got some sort of pay increase. The odds are good that you’ll be one of them.
Of course, you can’t just fly blind. If you’re going to ask for more money, you need to educate yourself about appropriate salary ranges for your job title, education, experience, and so on. PayScale’s Salary Survey will give you a free salary report to get you started.
Once you’ve got the information you need, the next challenge is mustering the confidence to ask for what you now know you deserve. That’s where these inspirational quotes can help:
“The most difficult thing in any negotiation, almost, is making sure that you strip it of the emotion and deal with the facts.” – Howard Baker
“A small pay discrepancy between men’s and women’s salaries for the same job may seem inconsequential. But over the years, salary discrimination adds up to a significantly smaller pension.” – Madeleine M. Kunin
“’What is your desired salary?’ The unwritten rule when it comes to salary is this: whoever proposes a number first loses. When you interview, you should never feel pressured to answer this question. Simply let your interviewer know that the most important thing to you is how well you fit the position.” – Travis Bradberry
“The reason that man is seldom satisfied with his salary is that when it increases, he increases his expenses.” – Mokokoma Mokhonoana
“Women attribute their success to working hard, luck, and help from other people. Men will attribute that – whatever success they have, that same success – to their own core skills.” – Sheryl Sandberg
“You have to persuade yourself that you absolutely don’t care what happens. If you don’t care, you’ve won. I absolutely promise you, in every serious negotiation, the man or woman who doesn’t care is going to win.” – Felix Dennis
“My salary situation at ‘Morning Joe’ wasn’t right. I made five attempts to fix it, then realized I’d made the same mistake every time: I apologized for asking.” – Mika Brzezinski
“Diplomacy is the art of letting someone else have your way.” – Sir David Frost
“Appraisals are where you get together with your team leader and agree what an outstanding member of the team you are, how much your contribution has been valued, what massive potential you have and, in recognition of all this, would you mind having your salary halved.” – Theodore Roosevelt
“Everything is negotiable. Whether or not the negotiation is easy is another thing.” – Carrie Fisher
