PayScale Methodology
How PayScale calculates salary comparisons for individuals

Everyone is curious about how their pay compares to others with similar jobs and how the market values their skills. This is how PayScale collects millions of salary profiles from employees around the world, enabling us to produce statistically accurate, individualized salary reports on thousands of job titles.

The PayScale Salary Survey

The PayScale Salary Survey is an online survey that asks questions about salary, experience and the workplace. Individuals searching online for salary comparison information complete the PayScale Salary Survey in order to get a free personalized PayScale Salary Report. This report anonymously compares individuals to other people with similar attributes such as job title, location, company size and education.

Accurate Typical Pay Comparisons for Local Markets

The PayScale Salary Report that you get as a result of completing the PayScale Salary Survey is a reflection of Typical Pay. Your Typical Pay range is generated based on the statistical median of salaries for Similar Profiles that reflect your local market.

Our Data

Data Collection
The data in your report has been collected by PayScale. We collect both employee (incumbent) data through the PayScale Salary Survey and employer data from surveys that we administer on behalf of trade associations.

Data Integrity
The PayScale Salary Survey is the world's largest online salary survey. We add over three-hundred thousand unique profiles to our database each month, which is more than most salary survey companies collect in an entire year! Individuals complete the PayScale Salary Survey in exchange for a free salary report that anonymously compares them to other people with similar jobs in the same location. There are no offers, payments, or other incentives made to encourage participation. Our survey is designed to discourage salary inflation and is unique in that it digs into pay influencers such as years in field, skills, education, and experience.

Each new profile that is submitted to PayScale must pass through a rigorous filtering process before it can be added to our active database. Our patent-pending algorithm applies over 32 stringent rules to verify data validity before it passes into our active database. Duplicate entries are eliminated and all unusual profiles are reviewed by an in-house PayScale Compensation Analyst before being included in the database.

Data Analysis
Our data analysis methodology is designed to avoid erroneous inference assumptions by only reporting actual data. Unlike other salary surveyors we don't use salary data from one geographic location to estimate what salaries should be in another location. We do not blend multiple sources of data into a single report, apply cost of living adjustments to our data, or artificially age our data. We only report data that we have collected and approved.

  • We only use profiles submitted within the last 365 days.
  • We report the average age of the data points used in creating a report.
  • We never modify or blend profile data.
  • We never apply inflation or cost of living adjustments.
  • We never estimate salaries from one region to another.

Data Reporting
PayScale Salary Reports reflect the typical cash compensation for an individual's job based on location, education, certifications, shift, employer type, and other factors. Many salary data providers use only job title and level when reporting salary data. This practice leads to broad and arbitrary data sets which are difficult to apply from one individual to another.

Our algorithms analyze up to 100 comparable data points (position, location, experience, education, etc.) of individuals with similar attributes to create each report. The matches are precise and exceed traditional sample sizes for highly detailed comparisons of this nature. A PayScale Salary Report must be based on a minimum of 5 profile matches (your position, level, location, industry, etc.). If we can't find at least 5 profile matches for a position, then we consider the number of data points insufficient to provide a meaningful representation of the market and we will not produce a report.
